How to Check a Used Laptop Before Buying: 20-Point Checklist (Pakistan)
By ZOVARI Team · Updated · 4 min read
Quick answer
Before buying a used laptop, spend 10 minutes on five things: match the model and specs to the ad, run a battery report (powercfg /batteryreport), check SSD health with CrystalDiskInfo, test every key, port and the screen for dead pixels, and confirm it boots without a password or company lock. Walk away if the seller refuses any check.
A used laptop can save you half the price of a new one — or become an expensive mistake. Most problems can be found in 10 minutes if you know what to check. Print this list or keep it open on your phone when you meet a seller.
Bring: a USB flash drive, earphones, your phone charger (to test USB-C charging if the laptop supports it), and a small file to copy.
1. Before you meet
- Ask for the exact model number (sticker under the laptop) and search its real specs. "Core i5" alone tells you nothing — the generation matters. Compare with our used laptop prices in Pakistan.
- Ask for a short video of the laptop powering on and showing Settings → System → About. Serious sellers do this happily.
- Agree to test before paying. If the seller says "no testing", that is your answer.
2. Outside: body, hinges and screen
- Hinges: open and close the lid several times. It should be firm, without creaking or the screen wobbling.
- Body: look for cracks near the hinges and ports, missing screws, swollen or uneven bottom panel. A lifted touchpad or bulging base can mean a swollen battery — do not buy.
- Screen: set brightness to maximum and open a full white, then full black image. Look for dead pixels, yellow patches, lines and pressure marks.
- Keyboard: open Notepad and press every key, including Fn keys and the keyboard backlight.
- Touchpad: test clicks, two-finger scrolling and the physical buttons on ThinkPads/EliteBooks.

Frequently asked questions
How do I check the battery health of a used laptop?
On Windows, open Command Prompt and type powercfg /batteryreport, then open the report and compare Full Charge Capacity with Design Capacity. Above 80% is good; below 60% means the battery needs replacing soon.
How can I check if a used laptop SSD is healthy?
Run the free tool CrystalDiskInfo from a USB drive. A Good health status is fine; Caution or Bad means the drive may fail and should lower the price or be a reason to walk away.
What are the red flags when buying a used laptop in Pakistan?
Walk away if the seller refuses testing, asks for advance payment, the price is far below similar ads, the battery is swollen, or the laptop has a BIOS password or company management lock.
How long does it take to check a used laptop?
About 10 minutes is enough to check specs, battery report, SSD health, screen, keyboard, ports, Wi-Fi, sound and webcam.
Is it safe to buy a used laptop online in Pakistan?
It is safest to test the laptop in person before paying, or to buy from a seller that offers a warranty, such as the ZOVARI Pro Mall, which gives a 14-day testing and replacement warranty on used laptops.
